Donate Yarn, Help Homeless Kids and Get Your Name Listed in a Crochet Book!

What if I told you that you could donate one skein of yarn to a good cause helping homeless kids learn how to crochet and in exchange you would get your name listed in the acknowledgments of a crochet-for-creativity print book by a published author? It's true!

It Starts with My Project

As you may know I am currently seeking donations to fund my next project, Hook to Heal. This is going to be a book of creativity exercises for crocheters. The exercises will help readers learn how to use crochet to nurture their inner artist, take time for self-care, improve their relationships, give back to their communities and more. In addition to the book (which will be available in both orint and digital formats) Hook to Heal will offer online classes and email support services as components of the program.

Teaching Homeless Kids to Crochet

In other (but soon you'll see how it's related) news, Crochet Kitten is also starting an exciting new project. She is going to be volunteering at a local homeless center teaching crochet, particularly teaching crochet to children. When she heard about Hook to Heal, she was excited and said: "The creativity exercises would be perfect to share with the kids--a great way to focus their energy on positive things."

I absolutely agree that her work teaching kids to crochet would be an amazing way to help them do something positive in a time when life may be tough for them. I can see how crochet might help these kids:

  • Regain, build and maintain self-esteem
  • Enjoy a creative activity that is also affordable and accessible
  • Create items to give to their family members during the holidays even though their family may not have money
  • Find beauty in simple things
  • Discover an internal sense of power in what may feel like a time of chaos and instability

Returning to Hook to Heal

So what do these two projects have in common other than the fact that both Crochet Kitten and I want to use crochet to help people improve their inner and outer worlds? Well, the two of us have teamed up so that you can help us both out at once in support of these two projects.

Crochet Kitten needs yarn to be able to share with the kids at the homeless shelter when she teaches her classes. She is seeking donations of yarn support and anyone can donate a skein.

I'm raising money to self-publish Hook to Heal using an Indiegogo fundraiser. Anyone who donates just $1 gets their name listed in the acknowledgments of the book. CrochetKitten and I have agreed that she will donate $1 in the name of each person who sends one skein of worsted weight yarn to her for the homeless kids. This gets your name in the book.

So to recap, you send a skein of worsted weight yarn to Crochet Kitten (address below). She will use the yarn to teach children in a homeless shelter how to crochet. She will also donate $1 to my Indiegogo fundraiser and that will get your name listed in the book when it comes out.

Yarn should be sent to: Crochet Kitten, PO Box 4832, Manassas, VA 20108. Include your name as you would like it listed in my book and make sure to let her know that Hook to Heal sent you!

Of course, you can always donate directly to my fundraiser; perks include advance copies of the book, email support sessions and more.
