I have been participating in local arts & crafts events for a few years now, and even been a featured artist in the past.  Yesterday, I was at a craft store buying yarn and wandered over to the jewelry aisle to look at beads, and came upon someone I know from a past job.  She asked me why I had so much yarn, and I explained to her that I was getting ready for a craft show.

She replied "You have a spot in a craft show? It's cute that they let crocheters participate. I guess it's not a fad after all!" Then she proceeded to tell me that she had been making jewelry and couldn't wait to start selling it, because she thinks she would easily get a spot in a craft show.

I almost couldn't speak! She belittles my craft (a fad?), then says she could get a booth with no problem, when I know for a fact that people who make jewelry have a harder time getting a spot because there are so many people to compete against.  I wanted to tell her off, but instead I said "Yeah, getting in to a craft show is not always easy, so I'm super happy with the NINE I'm doing this summer."  I then gave her my business card and told her to keep in touch, then walked away.

I've heard about how some people don't think crochet is as legit as other crafts, but I've never experienced it.  What a weird thing to get hung up on!  Maybe channel some of that energy into your own craft and stop worrying about ridiculous things.  We're here, we're fuzzy, get used to it!

Now I'm all riled up again and I'm going to go crochet some owls!!

The world is full of very tiny minds. And THAT is why Hookey is our place to play. We'll have none of that nonsense here :D

You go, girl. I hear ya. I recently was accepted to my FIRST craft show and I am super excited. Best part of it is? The people who run it specifically asked me to do more of my main product - I carve crochet hooks!! I thought I'd need more generic items, so I had submitted photos of shawl pins, hair sticks, as well as buttons and my crochet hooks. Nope! She said, "we've had so many customers ask for supplies, that it would be great if you had more of those, than the shawl pins" (It was a juried show, so I had to submit photos) WHOOP you bet! It will be very interesting to see just how many people actually crochet, won't it???? OH and about people who belittle it....just a little payback...recently, someone who belittled my craft before, now had to ask me advice about hooks and wants to purchase one. BOOYAH. So...it never pays to put down ANY craft; you never know when you find yourself needed it, huh! ;)
