Charity of the Month
We who crochet are a generous bunch! Each year thousands of men and women crochet for homeless shelters, premie units, foster care programs, women's shelters, and victims of tragedies.
To honor this tradition, we will highlight a charity each month on Hookey.org. There is no obligation to support or participate in the projects and there is no official affiliation by Hookey.org, Crochet Liberation Front or Laurie A. Wheeler, unless it's noted in the monthly post.

Boobies for Haiti
CLF Indie Pro Member Laurinda Reddig is collecting crocheted "booies" for a lactation consultant to use as models for breast feeding education in Haiti. These models will remain in Haiti after the trainings to assist mothers breast feed successfully.
Laurinda needs all breasts collected by June 18, 2012. For more information please go to her blog, which is where you will also find the pattern.
*Note: I have lived and worked in developing nations. One of the greatest challenges in mother/infant health is access to clean drinking water. Many times multinational corporations sell dried/powdered milk and market it as "baby formula" which is not a milk substitute for infants. Even when formula is available clean and potable water is not, helping mothers breast feed successfully goes a long way to promoting infant health.

Upon Butterfly Wings
I have to say, this tender project made me tear up to think of it. Once again I am not affiliated, just picking out charity projects for our giving hands to work towards helping.
From their website: UBW is a London based, completely voluntary, Non Profit Organisation which provide three separate support services for the newly and long term bereaved parents and siblings of babies lost in early miscarriage, premature birth, stillbirth and during the neonatal period. UBW primarily provide many hospitals all around the UK with knitted, crochet and sewn blankets, burial clothing, teddies and much more, meaning that every sleeping baby is given the dignity they deserve and their parents are left with a more comforting lasting memory, even if they do not realise so at the time. UBW also donate special 'Angel Care Packages' direct to newly bereaved parents who are unable to find anything suitable to wrap or dress baby in, in time for baby's burial. And finally, for those who may not have received a memory box at the time of their loss, UBW are able to provide a special butterfly themed ‘Butterfly Box’ at a small cost.
They have a list of patterns for crochet, knit and sewing on the website.
If you wish to donate to this project, they accept donations from around the world, please follow their donation guidelines.

Crochet 4 a Cause: Chelle of Dallas Texas has created patterns to sell to benefit a multitude of causes. She began this project in January and in the wake of the tornadoes in the Dallas-Fort Worth area she has added one more to her list. She contacted me about getting the word out to the crochet community.
My name is Chelle & I've lived in Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas since age 8. I grew up on the Dallas side & I've lived in Fort Worth since 2008, so I have many family & friends all over DFW metroplex. I want to do my part to help the tornado victims (people & animals) & have chosen to do so thru way of crochet. If you would like to either buy a pattern or make a donation @ www.crochet4cause.org then the funds will go towards covering the cost of yarn for me to make pillows & blankets for them; I know how important it is to get a good night's sleep & I'm sure it isn't easy with all that's going on in their lives currently, so I want to at least provide some comfort with pillows & blankets that I'm making for them. If you'd like to mail any pillows & blankets as well (made in any method), please mail them to: Crochet4Cause, PO Box 48508, Fort Worth TX 76148 & I will distribute them along with mine. Thank you all so much for simply taking the time to read this & to so many who have asked how they can help people in my hometown. It truly means alot to me & everyone else!
Also, you are more than welcome to mail a personalized note for a tornado victim giving them a note of encouragement along with your pillow & blanket donations (or) email Crochet4Cause@aol.com a note of encouragement for a tornado victim along with a monetary donation @ www.crochet4cause.org & I will print them out & deliver them. Let's spread some HOPE!
I love that Chelle supports suicide prevention as part of her charitable giving.
Note: I am not affiliated with this in any way, for more information please contact the charity directly.
