There are two motions to a row in Tunisian Crochet, a forward row and a reverse row. In the forward row you pick you stitches along your foundation chain, then you work one of and the rest two by two until one loop is left on your hook. Now you work the next row of loops up by inserting your hook into the vertical bars on the previous row, then repeat the reverse row, then continue in that manner and HEY PRESTO, you have crochet classical Tunisian Simple Stitch (TSS).

Good luck with it! It's a wonderful technique which gives great possibilities in colour work!

I have a few items I made using this stitch...I had to teach myself first, then figure out the terminology LOL!

Heather, you have shared your WONDERFUL hat in the Tunisian Crochet group rather than the Tapestry Crochet group. You might like to move it? It's GORGEOUS. Don't forget to load it to the Hookey photo stream too. Although it may already be there!

The terminology is the stopper for me.  I don't know what "uple" is or how to do it.  Is there a terminology dictionary somewhere that I can translate those terms with?  I want to jump into the scarves and shawls designed by Aoibne Ni, but holy crap, I can't make heads or tails out of the patterns.

OH, I did not realize it was Aoibhe's patterns you were referring to. I know she has a group on Ravelry, which I recommend you visit. to get the lowdown! She has also done some tutorial videos to explain her technique - I assume they are on YouTube or on her website. Aoibhe has developed her own unique and innovative style of Tunisian Crochet and I know she is very helpful, if you drop her a message with your questions. Hope that is a help!

Thanks, Irene.  I guess I didn't know she had something of her own technique of tunisian crochet.  Maybe that's why I don't understand how the patterns are written.  Or maybe I just need more info on tunisian and, well yeah, practice.  That always helps too.

Yes, I think her own technique throws experienced Tunisian Crocheters, but apparently it's a fun and different way. I strongly recommend that you visit her Ravelry group where I believe she has a FAQ and all sorts of support.

I am not sure, but it's my understanding that studying conventional Tunisian crochet is not much help for her patterns. I am not sure as I have never worked any of her patterns. I have only heard people commenting on the grape -wine.

In using Aoibne's patterns, it's easier to break it down to what it is, exactly. Aoibne uses linked stitches. And, she uses her own terminology. She has a video on YouTube which discusses her terminology. The usual Tunisian crochet terminology doesn't apply.

which covers the linked stitches and breaks them down for easy understanding. 

Linked stitches are actually Tunisian crochet stitches worked in narrow rows in a join-as-you-go method.

Foundation-less stitches are in the same category as well. If you have done a foundation-less single crochet, you will follow the same concept. A foundation-less single crochet, for instance is a narrow row of Tunisian crochet of only 2 loops. A foundation-less double crochet is a narrow row of Tunisian crochet of 3 loops. It will go all the way up to the taller stitches of triple, quadruple, etc.
